Linear actuator definition and type Definition: Electromechanical linear actuators enable precise, controlled, and repeatable push/pull movements in linear drive applications (see illustrations below).

Linear actuators are the efficient, virtually maintenance-free, and environmentally friendly alternative to hydraulic or pneumatic drives.

The standard versions are suitable for loads of up to 12 kN, are fast up to 174 mm/s, and can travel up to 1,500 mm. They can be housed in separate aluminum, zinc, or polymer enclosures or are available ready for installation for convenient plug-in operation. Linear actuators with a modular design and open architecture allow customers to choose from a wide range of integrable components to put together customized solutions within existing systems. The application potential can be further expanded with the help of special technologies for specific purposes, such as Hall sensors, limit switches, potentiometers, slip clutches, or safety nuts.

Threaded linear actuators with electric AC or DC motors basically consist of a threaded spindle with a drive nut and a push tube.

In 90% of all cases, a gearbox is located between the motor and the threaded spindle. When power is supplied, the motor rotates the threaded spindle, which sets the drive nut in motion and extends the push tube. Reversing the motor rotation retracts the push tube.
